Engage with nature... ...and get others engaged
My students and I provide programs for kids and the community on insects, insect identification, pollinator conservation, gardening without pesticides, birding etc. I also work with various NGO's, such as Beaver Creek Reserve, Gaylord Nelson Audubon, and The Prairie Enthusiasts etc. in citizen science and nature- based education and outreach pgms. |
From chapter published in Connecting Children to Nature, edited by Michael Bentley, Michael Mueller and Bruce Martin (Eds).Wood 'N' Barnes Publishing, OK. 2014. This is an effort to build a land ethic and appreciation of biodiversity by engaging more young people in nature at an early age.

Restoration MIAP3, Community Gardens, Interpretive Trails....
Students in my classes are highly engaged in the community as environmental stewards and educators; it's win-win learning by doing and giving.
- Conservation Biology students wrote an invasive species management plan (MIAP3) for the Putnam Park State Natural Area. They also completed a baseline biodiversity report for the EC City Waterways Plan. They annually remove invasive plant species, band birds( MAPS), have planted rain gardens and prairies and winterized community gardens. They have researched and developed interpretive trails, including the Lower Chippewa River Pedal, Paddle and Pollution tour.
- Entomology and conservation students provide programs on insects for kids, and contribute to local natural history surveys and bioblitzes
